What is a Christian?

In a day when most terms have lost their meaning, it is important that we as a church agree on the biblical definition of "Christian". A Christian is not one because of membership in a Christian church or because he was raised by Christian parents. According to the Bible there is a very narrow definition of the word.

Being a Christian has to do with:
  1. Faith (1John 5:11-13; Ephesians 2:8,9; 1Corinthians 15:1-4)
  2. A proper relationship to God (1John 1:1-3; John 17:3)
  3. Being born spiritually (John 3:3-7, 16)

What hinders people from becoming a Christian?
  1. An unwillingness to acknowledge their need (sin).
  2. A lack of understanding regarding the gospel.
  3. Wrong thinking regarding what a Christian is.

What will happen to me if I am unwilling to acknowledge my need, and how do I know if I have a lack of understanding or wrong thinking?

Well, there is some bad news and some good news you need to hear, and you will probably never get this news on CNN®.

First, the bad news:

  1. Bad News #1 – We are all sinners. (Romans 3:23)
  2. Bad News #2 – The penalty for sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

Now, the good news:

  1. Good News #1 – Christ died for you. (Romans 5:8)
  2. Good News #2 – You can be saved through faith in Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

This certainly is one time that we can be thankful we got the good news last!
